Title Building safer highway work zones: Measures to prevent worker injuries from vehicles and equipment

Abstract Highway and street workers are at risk of fatal and serious non fatal injury when working in the vicinity of passing motorists, construction vehicles and equipment. This document summarizes the data from current literature on highway safety, analysis of worker fatalities in the highway and street construction industry and workshop discussions on the measures that could be taken by employers, equipment manufacturers, government bodies and research agencies to reduce or eliminate these hazards. It lists interventions which can be implemented according to specific situations. A total of 29 fatality cases are analysed and measures to prevent future occurrences are provided.
