Abstract This information note is addresses to the issue of the various species of fungi that can present a hazard to workers who handle them in laboratories. It describes the different types of mycoses associated these fungi (generalized mycoses, subcutaneous mycoses, dermatomycoses or superficial mycoses), the characteristics of fungi, yeasts and moulds as well as the hazards and biological safety measures (confinement level) associated with each species. Safety measures applicable to the handling and disposal of fungal cultures in laboratories are also discussed.
