Abstract Machine noise reduction at the source is effective at all workplace points (near and far fields), it gives permanent results, improves comfort at work and does not involve constraints in terms of machine operation and maintenance. Its effectiveness depends directly on a proper vibro-acoustic diagnosis. After highlighting the main mechanisms of machine noise propagation, the paper describes the diagnostic methods available as a function of the treated aspect (generating mechanisms, transmission paths, radiant surfaces), discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method in an industrial context and compares the usefulness of methods combining relatively simple measurements and modelling of vibration and noise propagation mechanisms. Examples of application to three industrial situations are provided: a concrete vibrating machine, a diesel locomotive and a motor-driven pump.
