Abstract This status report commissioned by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work deals with the research evidence regarding the assessment and management of stress at work. It addresses basic issues, such as a definition of stress at work, the way it affects health and well-being and the implications of existing research for the management of work-related stress. The results indicate that work-related stress is a long-term health and safety issue; it can be dealt with in the same logical and systematic way as other health and safety issues. It is proposed that the management of stress at work be based on the adaptation and application of a control cycle approach such as those in contemporary models of risk management. This approach has already been applied in several countries of the European Union.
