Abstract This article shows that the number of accidents in a working population is related to the type of work, the workload and the level of risk of the work, and lays down the equations that link these factors. The objective of accident prevention is to decrease the number of accidents without decreasing the volume of work. Therefore the risks related to the work have to be reduced. The workload also has an influence on the number of accidents; this factor needs to be taken into account to avoid wrong conclusions when analysing statistical data.
