Abstract Approximately 80% of persons who work in agriculture suffer from back, neck and limb disorders, and some are permanently disabled. Many of these injuries are caused by poor manual handling practices. This booklet describes some of the practical measures that farmers can adopt to reduce the likelihood of suffering from back or muscle disorders. Examples are provided for the following farming tasks: handling spare tractor wheels; handling bagged products; lifting chemical and oil containers; handling of animals; bale handling.
