Title Chrysotile asbestos emission from asbestos cement
Original title Emissija hrizotil-asbesta iz asbestocementnyh izdelij [in Russian]
Bibliographic information 1998, No.1, p.40-44. Illus.
Abstract The release of chrysotile fibres from fresh and weathered (up to 36 years) asbestos cement building elements was investigated by electron microscopy. The emission of respirable fibres drops off with age at element surfaces that exhibit aggregation and chemical transformation (leaching, change in electrokinetic potential). Fibre emission is heavier from freshly fractured surfaces. It is suggested that stopping production is not warranted in view of a lower biological activity of the aged mineral, and it is recommended that the medical-biological properties of weathered chrysotile asbestos (cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity) be determined.
