Abstract This report describes work conducted in three phases aimed at analysing the components of accidents in manual handling injuries (MHI) and comparing them to other injuries. 55% of MHIs occurred in 15 out of 130 occupational groups. Most frequently represented occupations were labourers, sales and shop assistants and drivers. In some occupations, such as scaffolders, stagers and steeplejacks, all injuries were MHIs. Moving and transporting stock or materials, construction and tidying were the most frequently mentioned activities associated with MHIs. Lifting, lowering, carrying, trying to jump clear, holding with both hands and moving backwards were body movements involved in more than 70% of the MHIs.
