Abstract This criteria document gives an overview of the health effects of interactions between tobacco use and exposure to other agents. Smoking and passive smoking is a health hazard, inducing acute and chronic respiratory diseases, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking increases the toxic effects of exposure to certain agents (coal dust, pesticides); there may also be a synergistic effect (asbestos, silica, arsenic, radiation) or an antagonistic effect (chloromethylethers).
