Case report of a man who developed vesicular hand dermatitis after starting work in a factory assembling water-softeners. He worked with Proxel GXL, a preservative for the membranes of the water-softeners, which he diluted without using gloves or other protective clothing. Patch testing identified 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one in Proxel GXL asthe allergen. The case highlights the problems a worker can experience due to lack of information and poor working practices.
