Abstract Eyestrain before and after introduction of work on CRT display terminals was assessed by telephone operators, computer-aided designers and bank employees. All participants kept a diary of their eye problems. In addition frequency of blinking was determined. Telephone operators complained most frequently of eyestrain while bank employees had the lowest frequency of complaints. Reported eyestrain was highest during or after private conflicts. The ergonomic conditions on the workplace had little influence on the frequency of eyestrain.
