Title Stress in farmers: A survey of farmers in England and Wales

Abstract A survey of 500 farmers in England and Wales showed that potential sources of stress included problems with record keeping and paperwork, difficulty understanding forms, problems arising from the effects of new legislation and regulations and financial problems. The majority of farmers worked over 10h a day and many had health problems which interfered with their work. Results confirm findings from several regional studies that many farmers are experiencing considerable stress from various causes. Local and national initiatives to assist farmers should be encouraged.
