Abstract Despite a drop in the number of workplace fatalities in Ireland in 1996, the overall level of accidents rose by over 20%. Proposed measures include increasing the number of labour inspectors, particularly in the construction sector, raising the level of fines and providing training and advice for young people entering employment.
