Abstract Performance feedback training is known to have positive effects on the performance of visual inspection tasks in industry. However, when this training is conducted in a controlled environment, the improvements attributed to training may not transfer to an industrial setting because of environmental factors such as noise. The transfer effects of feedback training and practice provided under various conditions of noise were investigated. The major finding was that training and practice under appropriate noise conditions is critical for sensitivity improvements in industrial inspection tasks.
