Title Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome due to chlorine: Sequential bronchial biopsies and functional assessment
Bibliographic information 1997, Vol.10, p.241-244. Illus. 15 ref.
Abstract A case report is presented of a worker in a water-filtration plant who abruptly inhaled high concentrations of chlorine. He experienced immediate nasal, throat, retrosternal burning and wheezing. Symptoms persisted during and after the workshift. Bronchial biopsies showed histological abnormalities. The patient was treated with inhaled steroids and was asymptomatic five months after the incident. The case shows that rapid airways dysfunction syndrome can cause acute, marked, though partially reversible, histological abnormalities.
