Abstract This NIOSH Alert concentrates on the following aspects of latex allergy: background information (composition of latex, products containing latex, latex in the workplace); types of reactions to latex (irritant contact dermatitis, chemical sensitivity dermatitis, latex allergy); levels and routes of exposure; persons at risk; diagnosing latex allergy; treating latex allergy; how common latex allergies are; case reports; recommendations for prevention (aimed at employers and workers). Principal recommendations: use non-latex gloves when there is little potential contact with infectious materials; when latex gloves are used, prefer reduced-protein, powder-free gloves and remove latex dust from the workplace; educate workers about latex allergy; provide medical monitoring for high-risk workers, with removal of symptomatic workers from exposure.
