Abstract Many antineoplastic drugs are carcinogenic or mutagenic in humans. This study concerns the increased risk of cancer for workers handling such drugs. Among women workers there is an increased risk of spontaneous abortions and offspring malformations. This is an important effect, since the majority of health care workers exposed to antineoplastic drugs are women. Adequate protective equipment during the production and administration of these drugs and suitable preventive educational programmes are necessary for these workers.
