Abstract In the context of recent Italian Decree 626/94 (CIS 96-1531) concerning the protection of workers, the concepts of risk assessment and adverse health effects are discussed and clarified. An algorithm is proposed for calculating the probability of being exposed to a definite dose. Given that a specific hazard is present (Pr(e/p)) and the probability of occurrence of a health effect as a consequence of that exposure (Pr(d/e)), risk can be defined as a sequence of measurable events, starting with hazard identification and terminating with disease occurrence. In formula: R(d/p)=Pr(e/p)*Pr(d/e). Hazard given by exposure [Pr(e/p)] must be evaluated in the situation under study. For the estimation of the occurrence of adverse health effects [Pr(d/e)] a "direct" estimation of the damage might be conducted through specific epidemiologic studies and "indirect" estimation might be obtained using information either from the scientific literature or check lists and other available data.
