Abstract Signs of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis are described, and procedures are outlined for establishing the diagnosis and the relation of the disorder to occupational exposure. The importance of establishing a detailed work history is highlighted in addition to observation of morphological abnormalities. Diagnostic patch tests may be used to establish the work-relatedness of the disorder, to classify the process as irritant or allergenic in origin, and to develop strategies for management.
