Abstract From a review of recent research findings on the causes of absenteeism it is concluded that not enough attention has been paid to the connection between absenteeism and conditions in the workplace. When employees are not motivated enough by their work they may stay away from work for a day or two every now and then and blame it on minor health problems. In order to cut this kind of avoidable absenteeism it is recommended to make work more appealing to employees. In addition, employees should be informed about the consequences of absenteeism to the organization.
