Abstract All cases of skin diseases caused by contact with plants recorded in Erfurt, Germany, between 1973 and 1992 were re-evaluated. Included in the evaluation were all 86 cases of occupational dermatoses among horticulturists in Erfurt during that period. Of all plants involved in skin allergies, chrysanthemums cause the highest number of skin allergies. Horticulturists were affected most. It is assumed that a high exposure to allergens occurs when cuttings are taken for propagation of the chrysanthemums and when the plants are disbudded to obtain large flowers. The allergens are contained in the leaf and stem cells of the chrysanthemums and are lipid soluble so that they can easily penetrate into the skin.
