Abstract In this study a biomechanical model was used to calculate the transmission of whole-body vibrations to the spinal column. Both sitting and standing postures were covered. The findings were compared with the few existing publications on this subject. Contrary to the present notion that whole-body vibrations are less harmful to the spinal column in standing rather than sitting posture, standing seems to dampen the vibrations at the lower frequency range below 4Hz but not at the higher frequency range.
