Abstract This report describes the application of a commercially-available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code (STAR-CD) to the assessment of building effects in the dispersion of hazardous releases. For the three test cases studied, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement was achieved, except where atmospheric turbulence was the dominant mixing mechanism. While it is not yet appropriate to include CFD routinely in safety cases, the technique can be used to provide an insight into the detailed effects of buildings, release conditions and atmospheric conditions on gas dispersion.
