Abstract Report of a pilot study to assess the extent to which the concept of 'inherent safety' is being applied in the development and design of United Kingdom offshore oil and gas installations. The inherently safer concept is outlined along with its potential application offshore, reviews of the literature and current regulations, and summaries of interviews with offshore operators and design contractors. Findings indicate that the term 'inherent safety' is only just beginning to be recognized in the industry; few safety professionals seem to have a clear view as to its meaning and principles. Suggestions for the promotion of the concept in the offshore industry are put forward.
