Abstract The California pesticide safety programme is discussed from the point of view of a physician practising in an agriculture-rich area. The programme has 8 components: mandatory reporting of pesticide illness; tracking of pesticide sales; transportation and use; cholinesterase testing for applicators; integrated pest management; pest control advisers; safety and pest control operator programmes; physician education; pesticide regulation.
