Abstract Measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in the breathing zone of forestry workers (conducted in Germany between May and October 1994) during wood clearing, tree lopping and tree felling operations with chain saws yielded values which were frequently in excess of the threshold limit value of 30ppm. Peaks of 400ppm and in some cases even 600ppm were measured during lopping of dense tops of coniferous trees and during tree felling in calm weather with low wind speed. The biological threshold limit in blood was often exceeded.
