Abstract This study examined commonly used inks and solvents, in order to determine and quantify the main constituents. Atmospheric and personal samples were then taken in newspaper and book printing shops to evaluate the pollution levels engendered during printing (inhalable fraction, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and during cleaning (solvents). The pollution engendered by these operations was generally slight, except for cleaning operations of medium duration, where levels in excess of OELs may be found (aromatic solvents in particular).
