Abstract This audiovisual training kit, produced in association with the World Health Organization, serves as a step-by-step guide to employers and trade unions seeking to develop a programme to prevent and deal with drug and alcohol problems in the workplace. The kit includes information on the following subjects: the nature and possible causes of drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace; the problems it creates for workers, employers, trade unions and society; aims and objectives of assistance programmes; principles of programme formulation and implementation; different responses to substance use in the workplace, e.g. control measures, prevention, counselling, treatment, vocational rehabilitation and follow-up. Sample policy guidelines, sample programmes, a review of relevant legislation and institutional information sources are presented. The kit includes a sound-slide package useful for audiovisual presentations on the subject.
