Abstract Health and environmental problems associated with the extensive use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture are discussed, with particular reference to developing countries. Contents: extent of use of pesticides and crops treated; health and environmental effects of pesticide exposure (food contamination, pesticide poisoning, antifertility effects, neurotoxic effects); extent of use of fertilizers; health and environmental effects of exposure to nitrogen-containing fertilizers. The need for government policies to protect public health and the environment is emphasized.
