Title Chemical safety and health in Latin America: An overview

Abstract Chemical safety and environmental pollution issues associated with the increased use of chemicals in Latin America are examined. Topics covered include: urbanization and air pollution; development of the petrochemical industry and problems of oil spills and exposure to solvents; water pollution; health effects of pesticide use; occupational and public exposure to chemical hazards and recent international agreements on the control of chemical. Recommendations are made for improvements in chemical safety at the national and local level.
