Abstract Licensing requirements for outdoor activity centres in the United Kingdom under the Activity Centres (Young Persons' Safety) Act 1995 and the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 1996 are described. Activities within the scope of the licensing scheme include caving, climbing, trekking and watersports. Inspection of a centre prior to licensing focuses on how safety is managed, risk assessments, and implementation of control measures. Enforcement measures and required competences of staff employed at the centres are outlined.
