Abstract The nature of occupational stress is discussed with particular reference to four stressors: workload, uncertainty, lack of autonomy and conflict. It is argued that stress should be considered as a human resources issue rather than as a medical problem; managers need to be trained in the detection and measurement of stress and in its management. A draft document covering stress, fatigue and shift work issued by the New Zealand Occupational Safety and Health Service has been generally well-received by employers and will be finalized and issued as a guideline.
