Abstract This study was based essentially on numerical simulation of the determination of sound power levels by intensity measurement using two techniques (fixed point and scanning). Additional experiments confirmed the results of the simulation and also allowed for variation in time, which could not be simulated. It demonstrated that the scanning technique, using the same criteria and indicators as the fixed point technique, is a valid method for the determination of sound power levels. It also served to define the scanning conditions that produce results comparable to those obtained by the fixed point method.
