Abstract Report on a research project on hospital work, whose aim was to identify organizational constraints and their relationship with nurses' well-being. Via the application of the Organizational Congruence (OC) Method, developed by one of the authors, different Italian hospital work situations were analyzed in order to identify the possible risks and damage to nursing personnel due to their work. Such damage is not limited to that due to exposure to physical or biological agents, but includes also that due to psychophysical aspects of discomfort, caused by stressful conditions. Incomplete communication between nurses and other health personnel on patients' needs and their health status during work shifts has been identified as one of the main sources of work constraint. An improved organizational infrastructure and active participation of all health personnel is postulated as the best means to reduce stressful work conditions.
