Title Airway function and respiratory symptoms in sanitation workers
Bibliographic information May 1996, Vol.38, No.5, p.522-527. 27 ref.
Abstract A study of 81 municipal sanitation workers (street cleaners and garbage collectors) in Zagreb, Croatia revealed higher prevalences of acute and chronic respiratory symptoms than in a group of 65 controls. Lung-function testing demonstrated diminished forced vital capacity and 1-second forced expiratory volume among the sanitation workers. Results suggest that sanitation workers, particularly those with long periods of work exposure, may develop acute and/or chronic respiratory symptoms and decreases in lung function. Recommended health precautions include suitable protective clothing and a medical surveillance programme.
