Title Stress prevention in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production industry

Abstract This paper describes the use of a stress audit to identify sources of stress among workers in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production industry. Measures are outlined for the prevention of stress related to understimulation, work overload, helicopter travel, physical working conditions, safety and security offshore, unpredictability of work patterns, career development, organizational structure and climate, and the home/work interface. Individual strategies for stress control include counselling, relaxation techniques, cognitive reappraisal, and stress education programmes.
