Abstract A survey of working conditions and exposure to arsenic was carried out among copper workers in Chile. High levels of arsenic and other pollutants were found in two smelting shops and in the surrounding area; analysis of dust samples from the shop floor showed an arsenic content of 11 to 19%. Workers rarely used any form of respiratory protection. There was a high frequency of silicosis among mine workers. The role of trade unions in improving the working conditions of these workers is emphasized.
