||Conclusions of this criteria document, translation of a report finalized in March 1980: the main effects of styrene reported in humans are irritation of the mucous membranes and disorders of the central nervous system. Styrene is metabolized to styrene-7,8-oxide, which has proved to be mutagenic and carcinogenic both in vitro and in animal experiments. Studies of industrial workers exposed to mixtures including styrene have revealed an increased incidence of leukaemia and lymphomas.
