Abstract Risks associated with the manoeuvring of jack-ups onto location next to a fixed installation were investigated. In order to establish likely impact locations and velocities, a typical procedure for such a manoeuvre was drawn up. Impact modelling studies show that if the mean clearance cited in the procedure can be maintained, the likelihood of impact under normal circumstances is extremely small. The resulting graphs can be used to determine the risk level for a given seastate, duration and intended clearance between the jacket and the jack-up.
