Abstract Simulation of malfunctions during work with semiautomatic equipment of a type often encountered in the chemical industry (filling of containers with a hazardous solution) showed that in most cases the operator tended to "compensate" for the malfunction and continue to work, with manual intervention, instead of interrupting work and asking for the equipment to be repaired. Although such behaviour is irrational from the standpoint of system safety, it is motivated by an attempt, on the part of the operator, to gain time and increase productivity and thus remuneration.
