Abstract Presentations and subsequent discussions from a symposium held in Orlando, Florida, USA in 1993. In addition to several papers on the causes and prediction of equipment failure, there are three dealing explicitly with occupational safety. "Management of safety on major turnarounds" describes the administrative and technical methods used to safety shut down, modify and restart chemical plants. "Training CPI [chemical process industry] workers to comply with OSHA [US Occupational Safety and Health Administration] regulations" emphasizes the importance of developing employee competence and documenting work procedures. "Application of HAZOP [hazard and operability] analyses" deals with safety analysis in a large 20-year-old ammonia plant in Europe.
