Abstract The presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) fumes is primarily due to the decomposition of sulfur-containing organic matter (such as fish). This training guide covers: characteristics of H2S; natural, artificial and industrial sources; effects of exposure on the body (can be fatal at concentrations > 200ppm); accident causes; exposure limit in Chile (8ppm = 11.2mg/m3); measures of prevention (general; before, during and after fish unloading operations; emergency measures); first aid; personal protective equipment; detectors; check-list for prevention.
