Abstract Translation of a report finalized in Jan. 1991. No epidemiological data are available on the effects of nitrobenzene in humans. Acute intoxication has been reported following exposure to solutions containing nitrobenzene; intake in conjunction with alcohol appears to promote absorption. Both acute and chronic exposure cause methaemoglobin formation which results in haemolytic anaemia, icterus, hypoxic damage to internal organs and disorders of the central nervous system. The substance may be absorbed through the skin.
