Abstract A cohort of 246 polishers was studied. On an average workday, 41% of the polishers had to interrupt their work because of pain in the hands, for periods from 30min. to one week. There was no significant difference between the left and the right hand. The ergonomics of polishing were analyzed; wrist movements were involved in 50% of the polishing cycle. Recommendations are made for the optimum design of work stations.
