Abstract This guide provides advice on substances that produce energy, mainly in the form of heat, by self-reaction or reaction with air or moisture. Contents: legislation; properties of energetic substances; assessment of these substances (chemical structure, classification for carriage and supply, thermodynamic properties); testing of substances; labelling; control of risks during storage, transfer, processing and other operations; use of inhibitors and venting; additional recommendations for the identification and control of spontaneously combustible substances. Summaries of a number of incidents are included.
