Abstract Computers are widely used in occupational medicine mainly because data in computerized medical records can be used for epidemiological studies. The main steps involved in creating such records are listed. The major objectives of epidemiology in occupational medicine are reviewed, as well as the different study designs. Choices to be made at each step are discussed: population definition, length of observation, data to be collected about individuals and the working environment. The main components of a computerized system for medical data management are also discussed, as well as problems regarding confidentiality of data.
