Abstract Crotonaldehyde causes irritation of the mucous membranes in humans. In a study of workers occupationally exposed to various alcohols and aldehydes, including crotonaldehyde, an increased incidence of carcinomas, particularly of the mouth and bronchia, was observed. Animal experiments indicate that the substance has a high acute toxicity and is strongly irritating; cytotoxic and mutagenic effects have been observed.
