Abstract Statistical analysis of compensated and non-compensated (without absence and with < 3 days absence) occupational accidents in an Italian automobile plant, and discussion (based on a survey of the literature) of the difference between the two types of accidents. The main conclusion is that up to 90% of accidents in workplaces result in non-compensable injuries and that the epidemiology of such injuries is significantly different from that of compensable accidents. In particular, non-compensable injuries tend to involve cuts, injuries caused by foreign objects and injuries of the eyes and the hands, while compensable injuries tend to involve contusions (bruises), musculo-skeletal problems and injuries of the trunk and the joints.
