Abstract Leptospirosis is a potential hazard to farmers, agricultural workers and those coming into contact with rats or natural inland waters. The discovery and nature of the disease are described along with the means of transmission via infected animals, the effects of the disease in humans and occurrences of the disease in the British Isles since 1922. A table shows occupational/risk groups from 1970-1992 with numbers affected and deaths. Guidance is given on reducing the risk of the disease along with methods of treatment and prevention.
