Abstract Article I surveys the damage to the body or the nervous system that can be caused by noise and vibration from portable hand tools. Article II provides the results of a statistical study of 324 accidents involving the use of portable machines such as drills, hammers, staplers, saws, grinding machines etc. Tables summarize the circumstances of the accidents and the nature of the injury suffered. For each machine, the principal hazards and appropriate preventive measures are indicated. French and European legislation are surveyed.
